SEO Tools for Ghost Users
Ghost ships with sensible SEO defaults, but a few of them work silently in the background; these free tools let you see what they produce on your live site.
If you publish on Ghost, you already know the trade-off: a clean editor and fast themes, but no Yoast-style plugin sitting over your shoulder. Most SEO decisions are either baked into the theme or left to you, and three of them tend to cause trouble once a publication grows.
Redirects are manual. Changing a post slug, restructuring tags or moving over from WordPress or Substack does not create a single redirect on its own. You write the 301s into redirects.yaml, often with regex rules for old URL patterns, and upload the file from the Labs settings. One typo in a pattern and readers land on a 404. After each upload, paste a batch of old URLs into the Redirect & HTTP Status Checker and confirm every one returns a single 301 to the right post, not a chain or an error. The Technical Site Audit (Crawler) picks up broken internal links the move may have left behind.
Empty meta fields fall back without warning. When you skip the meta title and description in the post settings, Ghost fills them from the post content, so many articles go live with snippets nobody chose. The Meta Tag Analyzer shows what a live post actually outputs, the Google SERP Snippet Preview lets you write a better pair before you hit publish, and the Open Graph & Twitter Card Checker catches the same fallback on social shares.
Every tag and author archive is indexable by default. Ghost offers no bulk noindex switch, so archive pages with a line of description and a list of excerpts can end up competing with the posts themselves. Run a few tag URLs through the Thin Content Checker, and use the Keyword Cannibalization Checker to see whether an archive and a post are chasing the same query. If you decide to noindex some of them, that is a theme edit in default.hbs or a tag template.
Each tool is free, works in the browser without an account, and runs a live check on the URL you give it. Scored tools return a 0–100 result plus a fix list, which makes them handy to re-run after every theme update.
