SEO Tools for Squarespace Users
Squarespace decides a lot for you, from robots.txt to canonicals. Free live checks for the few places where your own edits can still trip you up.
Picture a common Squarespace moment: you publish a blog post, notice the URL reads like a random string, and fix the slug. That happens when a post, product or event is saved before it has a title. Squarespace's own SEO checklist then reminds you to create a redirect for the old address, because a changed slug breaks every link that pointed to it. Clean slugs first with the SEO URL Slug Generator; after renaming, paste the old URLs into the Redirect & HTTP Status Checker to confirm each one returns a 301 to the new page instead of a 404, and run your main pages through the Broken Link Checker to catch internal links you forgot to update.
Canonicals are the next trap. Squarespace adds a self-referencing canonical tag to pages automatically, and the main editor does not let you change it. Pasting your own canonical through code injection does not replace the built-in one; you end up with two canonical tags that disagree, which leaves search engines to pick. The Meta Tag Analyzer shows every canonical on a live page, so you can tell at a glance whether an old injection is still sitting in a header.
Some things you simply cannot edit. Squarespace generates robots.txt and the XML sitemap for you, and neither file can be changed. On a small site that is often fine; on a larger one it limits how much crawl control you have. What you can do is check the output. The Sitemap Finder & Validator locates the sitemap, validates it and counts the URLs inside, which is a quick way to notice pages you did not mean to publish.
The rest is ordinary on-page work, and these tools are free, run in your browser and need no sign-up. The Image ALT Text Checker flags missing descriptions on image-heavy templates, Keyword Research helps you phrase page titles and SEO descriptions the way people search, and the On-Page SEO Audit wraps it up with a 0–100 score and a fix list.
